Hey Reddit! I’d like to share a little about myself. I’m 22 years old and live in Ohio. Growing up, I didn’t really understand the value of money and lacked discipline. Currently, I work at a mattress store on commission, but it’s not enough for me to move out. I pay no bills and still live at home with my mom. Most of my expenses come from using DoorDash, which is a habit I’m trying to break.
My question is: if you were in my position, what advice would you give me? I make about $1,300 a month and have some savings in my bank account. I need advice on how to ensure I live comfortably.
Think about your passions for a career. Research job opportunities and salaries in those fields. Once you decide, look for grants, scholarships, or internships.

Honestly, I’m not passionate about anything right now.
Since you have no bills, save as much as possible to get ahead. Do you have a vehicle and a high school diploma? Consider getting a part-time job to explore different fields. You could also look for work at DIY stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s to see if you enjoy any trades. Alternatively, you could assist a local tradesperson to learn more about their work. Determine what you like and want to do before deciding on school or an apprenticeship.

I have a fully paid-off car and a high school diploma. I might be able to take a part-time job.
That sounds like a great idea! Look for businesses that interest you. Since you’re not paying rent or utilities, now’s the perfect time to explore options. You could even consider rental properties or developing apps. Helping elderly people with chores could also be a good venture. Trying various tasks may lead you to something you enjoy.
Look up the salary you need to live comfortably in your area and explore careers that can meet that. Research the programs and certifications required, and focus on community colleges instead of for-profit schools. A higher-paying entry-level job can be hard to find, but it’s worth a shot.
Try to find a career instead of just a job. If you’re good at sales, look for a position with higher commissions. Also, avoid spending money on DoorDash and similar services. Start investing a small amount each month, even if it’s just $100, as it can grow significantly over time.
A friend of mine builds and manages Etsy stores for others without charging fees; he only takes a profit share. I could connect you with him if you’re interested.
