I’ve seen everything from $1,000 to $10,000 thrown around. What’s your number, and how did you come up with it? Let’s talk real figures—how much would truly make you stop working for good?
3k
Based on expenses
Unless people also say what country they’re in the answers aren’t going to be helpful. $1,000 in Thailand is very different from $1,000 in Switzerland.

I make 4000 USD, I’m Australian. Single and young, I can live OK in a tier 1 Australian city, great in a tier 3 Chinese city, OK in a tier 1 American city, great in tier 1 Russian, and OK in tier 1 European cities.
3K would cover everything—rent, food, car, health insurance, etc. A bit more would add some buffer. I wouldn’t stop working though, I like working.
$3,000 a month would be enough for me to cover my bills and still enjoy life.
I’d be happy with $600 a month passively. I’d spend half the year in the Philippines and the other half on my family farm in the US. Currently making $110 passively from a HYSA but need ideas on increasing that by $500.
@Val
A HYSA isn’t a great long-term investment. Look into some income ETFs for more stable passive income.

Check out GAIN and O tickers. I’ve got about $180k invested in both and make around $900 a month.
3-4k net depending on location, for someone solo.
I’m at $5k per month now, and I feel pretty secure. It’s not enough to retire, but I don’t stress about money. Most of it comes from real estate.
Currently at $8k per month. Working on getting it to $30k, which would replace my and my wife’s full-time incomes. Still, we might not stop working entirely.
I’m at $2k a month now. If I can get to 6-10k, I could start my dream of being a traveling YouTuber.
After my divorce, I discovered how cheap Southeast Asia is. $3,000 a month lets me live very well in places like Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand.
