Thinking of Starting a YouTube Channel in My Free Time as a Side Gig. Any Success/Failure Stories?

I’m considering starting a YouTube channel in my free time, which could potentially grow into something more if it gains enough attention.

Has anyone here had success or failure stories with YouTube?

I want to do the same thing! Just don’t expect to earn money right away; think of it as a hobby. If you start making money, that’s a bonus!

Seven years ago, I started a product review channel. For the first couple of years, I didn’t earn anything. Then I made about minimum wage for a couple more years. Now, I do it full-time.

That’s awesome! Did you review items you used yourself during those early years?

Initially, I found websites that sent me free products—nothing amazing, but it helped me get started.

What’s the name of your channel?

Just subscribed. Thanks!

That’s a cool idea for a channel! I do something similar but with toy claw machines. Nice vids!

I work with content creators and have many success stories. You need to understand the algorithm. I provide free online coaching that’s a lighter version of what I offer my paid clients. It’s my way of giving back.

I’ve been in digital marketing for 15 years and can help decode algorithms. Many creators don’t understand them, and once they do, it’s eye-opening. Check my profile for free resources.

I’ve always wanted to do the same! I used to work in production as a video editor and animator, but I’ve never had the drive to go it alone.

I’m also looking for ideas. I thought about starting a children’s channel since I have a cool name I’m proud of.

Please do! There are too many terrible kids’ channels out there pretending to be suitable.

It’s like they have a political agenda. I agree.

I’ve tried freelance editing for channels but struggle with motivation.

Generally, you don’t start a social media hobby intending it to be a revenue stream. You do it, and sometimes money comes from it later. Most of the time, it won’t be enough to be worthwhile.

I ran a channel that became monetized. It was fun, but got stressful at times. The comments would get to me occasionally, but I’m glad I did it. Just go for it!

I’ve had my channel for about two and a half years and have been monetized for a year and a half. It’s not very profitable—around $50 a month. I make more money from affiliate links than from AdSense.

My husband started a channel as a hobby, and it became monetized and is now his full-time job. Don’t expect quick success or significant earnings—this took him years.

It’s definitely a grind, and there’s no guaranteed success. Consider it a hobby rather than a side hustle. If it works out, great; if not, that’s fine too. Just ensure you put in effort and have good ideas.
