What Are Some Overnight Side Gigs That Have High Starting Pay?

I will eventually be leaving my job to start my own business. I will need every daylight hour available for my business and will still need income to pay bills until it grows enough to be self-sustainable. I am looking for something easy to get into that pays well and is relatively easy to get into.

I used to do warehouse work; overnight machine operators were always needed and paid well, but they also tend to have mandatory overtime and it becomes physically taxing. I don’t mind working 40-50 hours a week, but I cannot commit every single night, all night, every week.

Any other ideas?

It totally depends on your town, but DoorDash and UberEats (again, depending on the town) can pay very well at night.

How much we talking about in terms of numbers?

It completely depends on your town, how many of the gig apps you can get on, and how good you get at working them (knowing where to be when in your town, which restaurants to avoid at what part of the day, understanding what kind of orders come in when and knowing how to be choosy about how many miles you are willing to drive for how much pay for an individual order, etcetera etcetera etcetera).

UPS has 4-hour shifts overnight. Good pay, benefits day one, pension when you get old.

Thanks. 4-hour shifts sound nice. I’ll look into it.

From experience, if you’re quitting your day job to start a business, your business needs your full attention.

If you do a side hustle, I suggest it be tied to your business so you can stack your skills.

Or stay at your day job long enough to build up a fund that you can live off of for a year while getting your business up and running.

@Griff
Which is why the OP isn’t interested in starting another business on the side. He wants an hourly job that he can put energy into without stressing over ‘making it work’ like he already is with his new startup company.

@Dana
Yeah, I get that. My suggestion is having that side hustle/part time job linked to the business. Not some random thing that has nothing to do with his business.

I need something random not connected to my future business to cover base expenses until the business becomes self-sufficient. I do not need a hustle that requires investment, just a job that I can show up to and get paid. I can afford to work part-time at night on minimum wage and pay all of my bills.

Otherwise you would be right. It doesn’t make sense to start a business and then have a side hustle that requires me to start another business.

@Addison
In that case, apply for random 3rd shift jobs. Like 24-hour Fitness night attendant, night cleaner/janitorial. You may need a security card for security jobs, but third shift usually has a higher starting rate.

I’m not sure I explained clearly. From a business owner perspective, there is only so much time in the day & in life. I understand that you need a side job. My suggestion is that your side job should build the skills needed for your business. That way you’re aligned and your improved skills accelerate your growth. Doing something random pulls you in random directions and disconnects you. For your business to thrive, improve/build/stack your skills and attack.

What is your venture?

@Griff
Pest control.

I already have the skills, licensing, and knowledge to start to do it all myself. The only thing I don’t have is a truck that I’ll buy next quarter, and a pesticide applicator business license (this is easy to get but will be tied to my current licensing, and as soon as I get one it’s visible to the public, so my current and future employers will see me as competition and likely not want me working for them).

It won’t be terribly hard to generate enough income to cover my bills. A part-time job is just there for risk management.

I got a part-time job at the hospital 3 nights a week. I make about $800 extra a month. Then I do my self-employed stuff during the day.

What is the part-time work?

I just take food to patient rooms. It’s very easy, and I get out of my house 3 nights a week.

@Sage
Nice. Sounds helpful too.

@Sage
Not related to the OG topic, but do you expect to get tips when delivering the food? I mean, it’s at least 3 times a day we ordered the food to the hospital room when we stayed 10+ days.

No, I don’t. I get paid $16 an hour. If they mention it I say that’s not necessary.

I’m interested in learning a bit more about what you do. What are hours like?

@Addison
It’s an afternoon and night shift. So from like 3:30 to 8:30. We have these carts that we keep the trays in and I just have to add a drink to it then take it to their room.
