The channel originally focused on automobiles and vehicles, but as the topics of trade and electric vehicles gained traction, an opportunity landed on my table—and I had to seize it. Creating these videos (research, scriptwriting, and editing) takes me around 5–6 hours. I wasn’t expecting to make up to $1,000 that day; my actual estimate was $650. Now, I have enough to reinvest in the business. Isn’t that amazing?

YouTube isn’t really passive income. I’m a full-time YouTuber and let me tell you it’s a lot of work.
You can argue for evergreen topics, but trending topics have their time to shine and then fade away. So they aren’t really good for long-term passive income.
@DavisLucas
It’s definitely not passive when you do trending topics because it means your videos are almost outdated by the time they’re up.

You make a great point, how do YouTubers handle this?
@Drew
Make evergreen videos like how to change the oil in a car, drywall repair, or anything people will still search for years down the line.
If you’re making videos about the best Christmas gifts for 2024 or current news events, those videos will lose views quickly once the hype fades.
Each type has pros and cons. For evergreen topics, aim to rank in search to get the top spots and focus on issues that are always relevant. Expect some fierce competition there.
However, trending topics can also be beneficial. You could gain a lot of views quickly from these trends, and even if the video slows down later, you’ll still gather random views over time. In the end, those views do add up.
I have channels focused on both trends and evergreen content. To be honest, starting in a hot niche that’s trending is better than stressing over whether it’s evergreen. Avoid crowded niches like gaming if you want to grow quickly. There’s lots of competition, and you need to excel in editing, narration, and personality to stand out. The algorithm perks up in less competitive niches.

Post about things that will always stay relevant, like tips and tricks, jokes, facts, or games etc.

Top 10 lists and analysis of TV shows or movies work well too.
@Drew
They often put out videos even when not all the information is clear or known.
When covering trending topics, it’s better to be the first with 70% accuracy than to wait a day or two for 100% correct information.

For some creators, it might feel passive if they use AI tools to help with scripts and voiceovers.

Yeah, but people can see through that
@DavisLucas
Nobody talks about passive income on this forum
I was thinking of trying to make videos but I’m really unsure how to find topics that would actually work. I don’t mind putting in the work to make them, I just feel lost.

You’re welcome; all the experts charge for this info. /s
Google, Amazon, TikTok, and Facebook each have their own trending sections or top product lists. That’s how you can find the big topics.

You can set Google Alerts for specific topics. You’ll get an email every day with updates on that topic. You can try different prompts to catch the latest trends.
@Blake
How do I do that?

There are lots of AI tools out there, and they’re improving all the time. Even the free ones let you use a few times a day without a subscription.
